Error message - please help

Summary:

'Fixed length' record field is not big enough to enter enough data/information. Is there a way to increase the space (right now it is limited to 254 characters)? Please see message below for the exact wording of the message that pops up. Thank you!

This is what the message says: "The value was too long for the field RQ_GRP_DESCR254A (labeled 'Long Description'). It requires truncation to 254 characters. (126,141). A long edit box on the page allows essentially unlimited text, but the record field specified that the field is of fixed length. You entered a value longer than that limitation, so the value requires truncation to fit the record field."

This has presented a problem because the amount of information that I need to enter in this field is most often going to be more than 254 characters.

Can the 'fixed length' of the record field be increased to accomodate the need for this?

If you change the field definition for RQ_GRP_DESCR254A it will change for all Records in the system. If the Field is actually DESCR254A then it would do the same for all records using those fields.

The best case is to add a new field to the table that is of the Long Character type and then transfer the values from DESCR254A to it.

A note of caution when updating LONG type fields with general SQL you might have issues. You can however write them in data mover and run them there.
